RECOMMENDED “SOFT FOODS” – POST BARIATRIC SURGERY DIET

Soft and blended food (3rd Phase)

If you had weight loss surgery and you just passed without any problem or discomfort the 1st phase (Clear liquids) and 2nd phase (Liquids), you may be ready to incorporate pureed, soft and blended food into your daily diet. The soft foods phase is followed 20 days post surgery.

The soft food stage must be initiated with “baby food texture” choices; foods that can be easily crushed with a fork or mixed to a ‘slurry’ with almond milk, coconut milk, soy milk or water (Avoid the daily consumption of dairy products). You may stay on this phase for as little as 10 days or for 2-3 weeks, once you feel signs of satisfaction on your stomach you can gradually advance into thicker textures.

Keep in mind that your new stomach is just healing and recovering from surgery, learn to listen to your body and STOP eating once you feel satisfied, it’s better to eat 3 to 5 times per day in small portions so you can get enough nutrition without pushing your sleeve too much. Do not eat and drink at the same time, wait 20 to 30 minutes after eating for liquid intake.

List of recommended choices:
  • Low sugar sorbets and fruit smoothies
  • Low-fat pate or spread
  • Soft beans, lentils and peas, pureed or mashed for a little texture
  • Mashed banana with yogurt (Make sure is low fat)
  • Steamed fish
  • Thin consistency gravy and sauces
  • Milky pudding and tapioca (Use minimum sugar)
  • Tofu
  • Soft cooked scrambled egg or plain omelet
  • Pureed avocado “Guacamole”
  • Finely minced or pureed chicken or turkey in gravy
  • Pureed, thickened or soft piece vegetable and chicken soups
  • Pureed and/or very tender boiled vegetables such as carrot and cauliflower
  • Smashed cauliflower with low fat cheese sauce
  • Liquid oatmeal (sugar free, small portion)
  • Always include a plain protein powder/shake to your daily diet (in order to add a source of high protein)

Must read...
  • Potatoes are high in carbohydrates, avoid regular consumption.
  • Dairy products are not recommended, make sure is low fat. Almond milk, coconut milk and soy milk are better options.
  • Avoid spicy food in this phase.
  • Beef (Smashed, pureed..) is not highly recommended, might make you feel discomfort or “too heavy”, wait until the solid phase.
  • Oatmeal is high high in carbohydrates, avoid regular consumption. Choose small portions.
  • Avoid caffeine and carbonated drinks

Important!
If you feel discomfort while eating on the “Soft foods” phase, you might need more time on the liquid phase or you are eating wrong food choices. For any question or “uncommon” symptom related, please follow your nutritionist or bariatric team advice.
